Product Testing

SURFACE TESTING PN-EN 1177

Testing of products in our unit is conducted in accordance with an established set of procedures. This enables us to verify whether a product complies with current regulatory requirements.

The results are documented and confirmed in an independent test report, which provides clear and reliable evidence of conformity.

We conduct tests in our laboratory or at one of our subcontractors in the case of accredited testing.

  • PN-EN 1177 Playground surfacing that absorbs falls -- Methods for determining impact attenuation.

Description of the standard and tests

PN-EN 1177 is a European safety standard that defines requirements for impact-absorbing surfaces used in playgrounds and other children’s play areas. Testing surfaces in accordance with PN-EN 1177 is intended to ensure safe play by providing adequate impact attenuation and reducing the risk of injuries caused by falls.

Surface testing under PN-EN 1177 includes, among others, measurements of material thickness and density, evaluation of damping characteristics, and standardized impact tests to determine shock-absorbing performance.

In public play areas, surface testing according to PN-EN 1177 is required wherever the potential fall height exceeds 60 cm. To maintain ongoing safety, impact-absorbing surfaces must also be regularly inspected and properly maintained to ensure their long-term effectiveness.

During testing, certified specialists measure impact attenuation, meaning the surface’s ability to absorb collision energy and limit the forces transferred to the body during a fall. This performance is verified using specialized instruments, such as calibrated impact test devices (commonly referred to as HIC or impact attenuation testers), which allow precise determination of surface safety parameters.

The test results determine whether a surface is safe for users or requires corrective actions, repair, or replacement.

Conformity testing according to PN-EN 1177 evaluates the dynamics of a fall, including the forces acting on the body and the associated risk of injury, in order to verify compliance with the safety limits defined in the standard.

PN-EN 1177 surface testing is especially important for playgrounds, sports and recreation parks, playing fields, and other public spaces where children and young people spend time playing. Proper testing, combined with ongoing inspection and maintenance, reduces the likelihood of injury, while improving user safety, confidence, and satisfaction.
